St John 1:1 – 5

St John’s Gospel

February 11th 2020

Today I’m thinking and praying about John 1: 1 – 5

What a terrific start it makes!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1: 1 – 5)

John is setting out his stall. “We’re talking about God,” he says, “more specifically, we’re talking about the origin of the universe and the origin of human life through the power of the Word.”

And then John tells us four things about the Word:

  1. Everything was made through the Word
  2. The Word holds life
  3. The life is the light of all mankind
  4. Darkness has not overcome the light that the Word has brought

There is a great deal of good news in this. Its message to me (and its message to you may be different) is that God intended to create humanity, that our existence is part of his plan, that part of his purpose is that we should be enlightened; and it says that the darkness has not overcome the light of life. It also says that his life is the light of all mankind; this light is for all of us, whatever our colour, creed, gender, or sexuality.

Prayer

Thank you, Lord God, for creating me. Thank you for your light that has never been overcome by the darkness. Amen.
